When trying to protect PA bats biologists encounter several challenges. One of the challenges is the spread of white-nose syndrome disease which is caused by the fungus Geomyces destructans. Bats go into a state of hibernation and this disease interferes with this event. It causes the bats to awaken and use energy that should be reserved. Death usually results because of the interference of this disease. It is unfortunate because the fungus remains in the caves therefore damaging other uninfected bats.
